If you want, or need, to sell your house and it’s the middle of the holiday season, you might be wondering if you should sell. That’s a valid question and, frankly, it makes sense to ask. In this blog post, we’re sharing four disadvantages of selling a house during the holiday season. These apply to sellers everywhere, not just Oregon.
There are many theories about when the best time to sell your house might be. In many cases in and around the pacific northwest, spring is best, summer and fall are second best, and winter is okay, except for the holiday season. Potential buyers are distracted by the season making this the most difficult time of the year to sell.
Four Disadvantages Of Selling A House During The Holiday Season
#1. Selling during the holidays can be disruptive to your holiday plans
The holidays are often times when you might have your extended family over for meals or visits. You may plan on spending a nice quiet evening in with your family, drinking hot chocolate and watching a classic Christmas movie on TV. But if a buyer wants to look at your home, what choice do you have but to pack everything up and leave while the agent shows your house. If you need to sell you can’t ignore any opportunity to show.
#2. Selling during the holidays can be messy
If you get a lot of snow or rain in your area during this time of year, it can be extra messy. With family or potential buyers wandering through tracking in snow, ice, and mud from outside, you need to keep the place clean to make the best impression. It’s not very pleasant to be cleaning during a time you’d rather be enjoying the holidays!
#3. Selling during the holidays can be cold
Potential buyers walking through your house don’t care about your heating bill. They wander inside and outside, leaving the doors open, even checking that the windows work. You pay for it but, unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about it!
#4. Selling during the holidays can cause delays
You want to sell, and you probably prefer to sell quickly. But those potential buyers are on their own timetable. In other words, they may expect you to disrupt your plans for holiday dinners, outings or family. Then again, they might not make a decision over Christmas. Even if they do, they may not be able to schedule appraisers, bankers, inspectors, or title companies to get the services they need. And I bet those services will take longer than usual.
These are just four disadvantages of selling a house during the holiday season. I bet you can think of many more. So you CAN sell your house during the holiday season, it’s just not going to be very convenient or fast.
