The following is based on a true story as told to me by my client, Marty (not his real name). One day, in a moment of desperation he did a web search on his telephone, “Buy my house [City name],” and he came up with www.Appletreebuyshouses.com.
He called and told me he was sick to death of his situation. He wanted it to be over. His house was a wreck because he’d started the demo and began making repairs. His plans included adding a bath to the 3-bedroom, 1-bath house. After a brief discussion I made arrangements to see his property.
As we walked through the property he told me how he’d come to the decision to sell his shell of a half-finished house. Marty took care of his mom for 8 months before she died. He moved into the house where she lived by herself in order to help with her many needs. He helped her in and out of bed, cleaned her, fed her, dealt with her emotions and wanting to die.
After she passed Marty and his siblings were left with the house. It needed updating as it hadn’t been remodeled since it was built in the ‘60s. And, care-taking of an invalid had taken its toll in wear and tear on the house. In the wake of mom’s passing his six siblings were quick to offer help. Marty, a retired pipe fitter and union man, started work.
Brothers and sisters bought some materials but then seemed to lose interest. Marty, now in his early 60s, tore into walls, demoed the kitchen, cut concrete, removed carpets and vinyl, moved out thousands of pounds a trash, and began plumbing the new bathroom. Then he got shingles.
Finally, A Solution
For three months he couldn’t work and was in terrible pain. Now he was broke and getting no more help from the siblings. In the meantime, a brother took a $93,000 loan out against what was a free and clear property. It was the last straw. Marty couldn’t do it anymore. Even though the place looked like crap he figured someone would buy it.
